Um das Jahr 230 v.Chr. tat sich auf einem Feld der Halbinsel Methana ein Spalt auf. Nach heftigen Erdbeben quoll zähe Lava aus dem Erdinneren. Weit bis nach Athen war das Glühen sichtbar und antike Schriftsteller wie Ovid und Strabon berichteten von dem großartigen Naturschauspiel.
Innerhalb weniger Monate wuchs dieser Vulkan quasi vor den Toren Athens bis auf 412 m Höhe an. Doch erst um 1840 erinnerte sich ein Geologe an diesen Vulkan, als die jüngste Vulkaninsel Griechenlands in Nea Kameni/Santorin ausbrach. Der historische Vulkan beim Dorf Kameni Chora ist eines der beliebtesten Ausflugsziele der Halbinsel Methana. Nur wenige Griechenlandreisende wissen, dass man auf der Halbinsel durch eine Landschaft aus über 30 Vulkandomen wandert. Dass die Region schon in vorgeschichtlicher Zeit besiedelt war, davon zeugen Reste aus der mykenischen Zeit um 1400 v.Chr., sogar der antike Schriftsteller Pausanias soll die Halbinsel besucht haben.
Die Thermalquellen vulkanischen Ursprungs werden seit Jahrtausenden genutzt und sind ideal zur Linderung zahlreicher Gesundheitsprobleme und zur Schönheitspflege. Methana ist gut auf dem Land- und Seeweg zu erreichen und ein wenig bekanntes Ziel für Naturfreunde, Wanderer und Geologen.
